You may have heard about the shocking tape in which Mel Gibson allegedly goes off on a violent and racist tirade and admits to hitting his former girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, telling her she deserved it and worse.
Now, the police are getting involved.
An investigation was launched by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department, after Grigorieva, 40, filed a complaint. The incident in question reportedly occurred in January, at an undisclosed location in Malibu. This comes just after Grigorieva filed a restraining order against Gibson, 54, claiming he was physically abusive to her, alleging he struck her while she was holding their daughter and knocked her teeth out.
"An investigation of domestic violence was launched by Malibu/Lost Hills Station Detectives in July, 2010, involving actor Mel Gibson and his former girlfriend, Oksana Grigoieva," Lt. Richard Erikson confirmed to RadarOnline.com. "The detective in charge of the investigation is currently gathering information regarding the allegations. Due to the investigation being preliminary in nature, no other information is available at this time."
Gibson and Grigorieva are also currently involved in a custody battle over their 8-month-old daughter, Lucia, which may have spurred Grigorieva to come clean about the violence.
A rep for the Sheriff's Department said it could take a month before the inquiry is concluded and the results are turned over to the district attorney's office, which will decide whether to pursue charges.
