Plenty of movie fans hoped against hope that Mel Gibson's infamous 2006 tirade -- when he drunkenly shouted sexist and anti-Semitic slurs during a DUI arrest -- was a fluke. Because movie star Mel Gibson would be a horrible person if he talked that way all the time, right? Unfortunately, it appears that Gibson, 54, said much worse things to ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, 40. And she has him on tape.
The shocking recording, which was suppressed by a judge after being leaked to TMZ and RadarOnline, reveals Gibson screaming, threatening and insulting Grigorieva (who is the mother of his infant daughter Lucia, his eighth child). We hesitate to even print the things he said during their arguments -- it's that bad -- but you can read excerpts here if you're so inclined. Suffice it to say he uses the N-word, tells Grigorieva that she deserves to be gang-raped and threatens to burn down her house. He also calls her a pig, a "synthetic person," and several other things we'd rather not repeat. Grigorieva and Gibson are currently involved in a heated custody battle; they recently filed restraining orders against each other, and the tape leak follows reports that Gibson physically abused his ex, knocking her teeth out.
Assuming the tape is authentic (both TMZ and RadarOnline believe that it is), we are flabbergasted by the ugliness of Gibson's character. Has he always been hiding this bigoted, angry side? Is it only modern technology and the internet gossip machine that have revealed his true colors? We're glad we live in an era that holds stars accountable for abhorrent behavior -- even Gibson, that charming Aussie once best known for flashing his butt in Lethal Weapon. "Charming" may not be a word used in the same sentence with Mel Gibson's name ever again.
