Yeah, we didn't really miss him either, but Mel Gibson just can't seem to keep quiet. Nearly two years after audio recordings of Gibson's racist, misogynist rants were released online (possibly by his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva), another of his expletive-laden tirades has hit the Web. This one was recorded by screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, who claims he has tons more where that came from. You can listen below, but be warned: It contains strong language and lots of yelling.
Like the 2010 recordings, which emerged during Gibson and Grigorieva's bitter custody battle, this one has a back story. Eszterhas, a famously eccentric screenwriter, was hired by Gibson two years ago to work on his next film, the story of ancient Jewish warrior Judah Maccabee. (It was touted as "the Jewish Braveheart.") Eszterhas completed the Maccabee script this year, and when Gibson decided not to move forward with the project, the screenwriter sent a damning letter accusing Gibson of anti-Semitism.
"Let me remind you of some of the things you said which appalled me," Eszterhas wrote to Gibson in the private letter, which was obtained by The Wrap. "You continually called Jews 'Hebes' and 'oven-dodgers' and 'Jewboys'... You said the Holocaust was 'mostly a lot of horses***'.... Perhaps most disturbing, as I wrote the script, was a comment you made to me in your Malibu house. It came out of the blue, while you were playing on the living room floor with your little girl, Luci. 'What I really want to do with this movie,' you said, 'is to convert the Jews to Christianity.'"
To make matters worse, Eszterhas wrote, Gibson wouldn't stop "raging about" Grigorieva, calling her names, admitting that he "slapped her around a little bit," and even literally announcing his plans to kill her ("'No one will ever know,' you kept saying.").
The letter goes on for six pages, describing Gibson's terrifying fits of anger and recalling some of his worst rants -- including the one Eszterhas has just released to the press, recorded by his 15-year-old son Nick while they were guests at Mel's Costa Rica home.
On the recording, Mel can be heard screaming at the top of his lungs about the script for The Maccabees, cursing Grigorieva for being a "filthy little c***sucker who takes advantage of me," throwing things, and repeatedly screaming four-letter words at his guests. (There's a transcript here.) Eszterhas told TMZ that he has more tapes made by his son, and can name witnesses to the other rants described in his letter.
When asked why he let the recording go public, Eszterhas explained, "My interest isn't to damage him with this tape but to prevent damage being done to others, starting with Jews, including Oksana and now, I'm sure, me. I strongly believe that unless he seeks and receives some kind of psychiatric help, someone is going to get hurt."
Last week, Gibson issued a written response to Eszterhas's letter, saying that it was full of "utter fabrications," and that the only reason he didn't move forward with the film was because he hated Eszterhas' script. Of course, that was before Eszterhas produced a word-for-word recording of one of those "utter fabrications" he described. Now, reports TMZ, Gibson is looking into suing Eszterhas for invasion of privacy.
Perhaps what Gibson really should be doing is checking into anger management therapy.
