We've heard tapes of him hurling expletives at his ex-girlfriend and ex-screenwriter, but Mel Gibson saved a few angry rants for his family. In a sad but not entirely shocking development, Gibson's own stepmother has filed for a restraining order against the actor.
Teddy Joye Hicks Gibson, 78, has been married to Mel's father Hutton Gibson, 93, since 2001. In her court documents (via TMZ), Joye reveals that Mel and his sister Maura have been fighting with her over their father's medical treatments for the past two years. Joye claims that Mel has become violent and vindictive towards her, that he pressured his father to divorce her, and that he's now trying to evict her from her own home.
The core of the dispute is Hutton's health care. According to the court filing, Mel and his sister have been coercing their father (who is suffering from an undisclosed illness) into experimental therapies like Ozone and stem cell treatments. When Joye began expressing her disapproval, Mel reportedly warned her "not to f*** with [Hutton]'s treatments in any way."
"Mel began yelling and saying, 'f*** this and f*** that' while leveling other extremely offensive language at me," Joye writes in her court filing.
Joye describes several incidents of Mel screaming and threatening her. During one recent family meeting about Hutton's treatments, Joye says, "Mel became incensed and began acting like a wild man... He was so close that I could feel his spit hitting my face." She recalls being paralyzed with fear and vomiting afterwards.
But her issues with Mel go deeper than shouting matches. Joye believes that the actor manipulated his father into filing for divorce. Not only is Hutton a devout Catholic (and therefore opposed to divorce), but Joye says that their marriage is still strong. Furthermore, Mel's stepmother says he's pulling strings to try and get her ejected from her home, even though she has no place else to go.
About that divorce: Hutton filed for divorce from Joye in May, and reportedly accused her of abusing him. In this case, the term "abuse" meant that Joye was discouraging him from taking certain medications. Mel stepped in to assure that his father was getting the treatments that Mel believed to be appropriate. It's a sad situation all around, and Mel's alleged rages are certainly not helping anybody.
Joye has requested that Mel stay 100 yards away from her at all times, and stop interfering with her attempts to contact her husband. The judge has granted a temporary restraining order, and a full hearing has been scheduled for August.
