How do you know that you nailed your Saturday Night Live hosting performance? When they ask you to do it again just a year and a half later! According to Deadline, Melissa McCarthy will take up the gig for a second time on Saturday, April 6 (at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC). It's hardly surprising that the producers want a reprise from the Mike & Molly actress, whose film Identity Theft has recently topped the box office. And people loved her first hosting stint in October 2011.
She may be best remembered for the episode's cold open, when she joined her friend and Bridesmaids costar Kristin Wiig as one of the Dooneese sisters performing on The Lawrence Welk Show. Muscle-armed McCarthy and teeny-handed Wiig brought a certain grotesque … charm to the act, while the other three sisters attempted to carry on with their cheesy song and dance.
Generally speaking, critics tend to praise McCarthy for her fearlessness. What they mean, of course, is her willingness to look like a fool to get a laugh. And where better to get your fool on than Saturday Night Live?
Here's hoping McCarthy will reprise her role of LuLu Diamonds,
Whatever she does during the April show, it will be fearless. And probably hilarious, too.
