The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 was passed in order to provide coverage for mental illnesses and substance abuse that's on par with physical health issues. The new law ensures that financial requirements such as copays, deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses are no more expensive than that for medical and surgical treatments. Limits to treatment, such as number of visits, cannot be applied separately to mental health coverage.
