On October 5, 2010 we will be making some upgrades to iVillage’s message boards making them faster, easier and more useful for our members. These upgrades include a new look, updated features and improved search and navigation. We know the message boards are important to our members and understand that you may have a lot of questions about these changes.
Why are the boards changing?
Our message board technology hasn’t been upgraded in quite a while and we are making these changes to update the underlying system we use for our boards. This will allow us to take advantage of updated features and improve the overall experience for iVillage members. The upgrade will also include a fresh look to match the rest of iVillage and offer members easier access to peer to peer advice and relevant articles.
When will these changes happen?
We will complete the upgrades on or around October 5, 2010. We will be posting notices on the site and sending out reminders via email so our entire community will be aware that the boards will be changing and when these updates will take place.
Will I still be able to access my favorite boards and posted messages after these changes take place? Will I be able to access, read and edit my old messages?
All of our existing boards, discussions and messages will be available in our upgraded message board system and you will still be able to access and edit your messages after these changes take place. You’ll find everything you are used to but only better.
Do I need to sign up for anything or reregister to use the upgraded message boards? Will I be able to keep the same member name?
Current iVillage members won’t need to do anything in order to be able to use the message boards after the upgrade, you can simply log in with your current user name and password as you would normally. You can, however, visit our new profile experience where you can update your profile information, add photos and select topics to get iVillage article suggestions served up daily.
What if I have my favorite boards bookmarked? Will the message board URLs be changing?
When we make these changes, the URLs (web addresses) for the boards and individual discussions will also change, but the current URLs will automatically redirect to the appropriate pages in the new system so you will still be able to find your favorite boards and discussions.
Will the boards look different? Will there be a difference in the way I post?
Although the boards will be getting a new design and will look a little different than they do now, you’ll find the features and options you enjoy on the boards now – plus new ones. You will still be able to post messages in the same way you do now, but we’ve made the process of posting much faster and have included even more options for composing your message and getting notification of updates from your favorite boards or bookmarked discussions.
Will my current board profile be going away or will our profiles change?
We recently updated our site profiles and account management pages to offer a central place to manage your member information. You can read about this change and other new features here. The current message board profiles will be discontinued, as they are a part of the old system. In the upgraded message boards, you will have a message board specific user page as well as a link to your iVillage site profile. You will also have a place to set your message board preferences and options, much like our current "board settings" page.
Will the upgraded boards be functional with different browsers?
One of our main goals for these updates is to improve the browser and platform compatibility. This means that along with improved compatibility for all browsers and operating systems (including rich text editor options for Safari, Firefox and other browsers!), you’ll also be able to easily check the boards on the go and post right from your mobile phone.
Will we still be able to have a personalized signature with graphics, blinkies and tickers?
Community members will still be able to set a personal signature line with images just as they do now on the message boards. For those that prefer not to view signature lines in messages, we’re adding easier ways to turn them on and off.
Will there be any downtime on the boards during this change?
We’re making every effort to minimize any downtime on the message boards as we complete the upgrade. There will be a period of time where the current boards will become "read only". This means that you will be able to read the boards but not post to them. This is necessary so we can complete the final transition to the updated message board system. The read-only period will begin at 11pm ET Friday October 1, 2010 and last until we unveil the upgraded boards on Tuesday October 5, 2010.
Will I lose my post counts?
Your message board post counts will carry over to the new system
What happens to my attachments associated with my profile?
While all of our message boards and message board posts will be available after the upgrade, we are not able to transfer any attachments you may have posted to the message boards. We apologize for the inconvenience.
What other features will be available that we don’t have now?
Additional message board features will include expanded notification options, "quote" functionality, private messaging and posting without preview. We’ll also offer a brand new mobile experience that allows you to access the boards wherever you are and simple privacy settings so that you can easily select what information you'd like to share and what to keep private.
