It's a bittersweet day for Michael Jackson fans. His new song, "This Is It," has arrived -- but, of course, it's a melancholy reminder that he will not be performing it on the final tour that was to take place this year.
The song, which will appear on an album to be released later this month, is reminiscent of his early work, particularly his music with the Jackson 5. And there's a good reason for that: the song features supporting vocals from his brothers.
"This Is It" was reportedly recorded back in 1991. Among the hauntingly heartfelt lyrics are the words "This is it, here I stand/I'm the light of the world, I feel grand." It's a pared-down ballad that is punctuated with with the sound of finger-snaps.
The song is the title track of an album to be released on October 27th -- one day before the documentary of the same name premieres in theaters for a limited, two-week run.
Exactly what will be on that album is unclear -- a Los Angeles Times blog refers to its contents as "music that 'inspired' the Sony Pictures movie, Michael Jackson's This Is It." The film includes footage of rehearsals for the tour that was to begin in July. Jackson died on June 25th.
