Woo Hoo! That was my reaction and the reaction of the iVillage team when we learned First Lady Michelle Obama is now part of the Twitterverse. Yes, @michelleobama is run by her husband’s 2012 re-election team, but tweets from the first lady herself, we are told, will be signed with an “-mo.”
We wonder if the first lady will become as addicted as we are. Will she take to Twitter when she should be writing a speech or preparing for an event? After all, it is such a great way to procrastinate. Will she check out what’s happening on Twitter after Sasha and Malia go to bed? Will she dish about the new book about her and her husband that everyone seems to be talking about? Will she find herself wanting to share and share and share?
So far, there’s been just one tweet from “mo” herself. “Hi, everyone, and thanks for the warm welcome. Look forward to staying in touch with you here. – mo,” she tweeted Thursday, after President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign announced the new Twitter handle as a way for people to connect with the first lady and the president’s campaign.
She’s not the first member of the first family to join Twitter. Her husband, @BarackObama, joined Twitter, or rather the campaign created an account for him. The campaign tweeted today, “It’s not every day we get to welcome the First Lady of the United States to Twitter—happy to have you, @MichelleObama."
The president has nearly 12 million followers, but why do I think the first lady might be catching up pretty fast? After just about five hours on the social networking site, she already had nearly 100,000 followers. You go girl!
