First Lady Michelle Obama has come under fire recently for the short trip she took with her youngest daughter Sasha, 9, to the Southern coast of Spain. Reports were released claiming that the mom and daughter had reserved 60 rooms at a lavish hotel for their friends and that they were traveling with 250 Spanish personnel and 70 Secret Service agents. As some media outlets intimated that American tax dollars were used to fund this vacation, public outcry ensued.
In these rough economic times, hearing of an extravagant jaunt to a glitzy resort paid for with our taxes might enrage any American -- but the problem with these reports is that they were greatly exaggerated and some details were downright false. The trip itself was paid for by the Obamas, only a few friends accompanied them and it was not at the expense of taxpayers. Taxpayers did, however, foot the bill for the security detail.
Here's the thing, as a mom with at least two things in common with Michelle Obama -- my age and two daughters -- I wish I could go to Spain with one or both of my girls. Michelle has the means and opportunity to actually afford to share a wonderful international experience like this with her daughters -- so why shouldn't she?
Then again, the fact is that we're not talking about regular folk. They are special and live their lives very differently than the average mother and daughter. Not only did Michelle and Sasha relax on their trip, but they also traveled to Majorca as ambassadors and spent time with the Spanish royal family. Plus, security detail is necessary whether the First Lady travels to Seattle, Chicago or Spain because we have a duty to protect our president and his family.
What it boils down to is that while 12 year-old big sis Malia was at camp, Sasha got to spend special time in a beautiful setting with her very busy mother. Maybe we can all step back and see Michelle and Sasha's Spanish adventures as an educational and wonderful opportunity for a mother and daughter to strengthen their bond and enjoy each other's company.
