Michelle Trachtenberg is a young, fair-skinned brunette, so it makes sense that she was one of the many young actresses who could have played Bella Swan in Twilight. But Trachtenberg had more than a passing chance at the part, she explains.
"There was definitely interest here and there because there's only so few pale girls in Hollywood," the 26-year-old Gossip Girl actress tells Us Weekly.
Complexion jokes aside, Trachtenberg was in the running, because of a personal connection to the saga's original director.
"I've known Catherine Hardwicke since the movie Thirteen," she says. "I was actually supposed to star in that, but I was on Buffy at the time."
Before Hardwicke directed the first Twilight adaptation in 2009, she directed and co-wrote the award-winning drama Thirteen with Nikki Reed. Golden Globe-nominee Evan Rachel Wood played the 13-year-old protagonist in the critically acclaimed indie.
Eventually, Hardwicke cast Kristen Stewart in the pivotal Twilight role, and also hired her young friend and writing partner Reed, as well as Ashley Greene and Anna Kendrick to round out the beautiful young cast.
So what happened to Trachtenberg? "I guess schedules never worked out," she says. But there are no hard feelings.
"I already have Buffy," she added. "I've already done the vampire thing."
