Indie darlings Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling may or may not be a real-life couple -- but they certainly got close while filming the intense new movie Blue Valentine. Playing a couple whose marriage is disintegrating, Williams, 30, and Gosling, 29, have lots of fights, and apparently, lots of sex. But although the stars are -- at the very least -- great friends (and not at all bad to look at), they each say that filming sex scenes with the other was downright unpleasant.
"We did the sex scenes, and it was... toxic," Williams tells W magazine. "Ryan and I stopped relating to each other as Ryan and Michelle. Those scenes took forever."
The experience was so dark, Williams explains, because the scenes take place at the end of the couple's relationship -- when everything is going to pieces. She even describes the extreme measures she had to take to unwind at the end of the day: "I had a long drive from set to home each night, and I would roll down all the windows and turn up the music as loud as I could and hang my head out the window like a dog and scream."
Gosling agrees that the scenes were difficult, but for different reasons. "We had to call ourselves out on anything that didn't feel honest," he tells the magazine. "You have to strip that away if you're going to achieve a sense of intimacy. In real life sex is messy, and we wanted to get at that wonderful messiness."
One thing that Williams has decided not to worry about is onscreen nudity. "I have the usual self-loathing and body issues," she admits. "And yet I seem to be naked in a lot of movies. It would be really nice if the pictures did not get posed online. But then maybe that's the reason to do it: Just get naked, and who cares if it ends up on the Internet."
Gosling and Williams are currently promoting Blue Valentine at the Toronto Film Festival, where they're both generating serious Oscar buzz. Guess those difficult scenes paid off!
The film will be released in the U.S. on Dec. 31.
