Michelle Williams just shot down the main reason we were planning on tuning in for the Super Bowl. She claims that, despite many, many rumors to the contrary, Destiny's Child won't be reuniting during the halftime show.
Beyonce is set to perform during the football extravaganza, and there have been a steady stream of stories claiming that Williams and Kelly Rowland will join her on stage. It makes sense, as the group just put out their first single since they split in 2005. However, Williams tells WRUG Media that nothing is set in stone.
"That's not confirmed -- It is rumored," she says. "I'm gonna be in the musical Fela! I hate to disappoint the people and tell them that it's not true."
That echoes what Williams told MTV News recently as well. She seemingly denied her involvement then too, saying that thinking about performing at the Super Bowl "gives me a headache."
"Unfortunately, I honestly can't say," Williams said at the time. "Just thinking about it gives me a headache. It seems quite impossible because of our own individual schedules. My opening night for Fela! is January 29. I've been in rehearsals for that, so I haven't had time to think about learning anything else."
She added, "But who knows? Maybe sometime in the future, five or 10 years from now, we'll see."
We're crossing our fingers very, very tightly that Williams is just trying to throw the media off her scent. After all, it won't be very much of a surprise to have Destiny's Child perform if everyone is expecting it anyways. Beyonce, Rowland and Williams have all moved far away from their Bootylicious days, and to have Williams be the reunion's one holdout would be a big shame.
Of course, it also could be that Williams is being serious about her involvement in Fela! being a reason that she won't talk about the Super Bowl. Opening a new musical probably brings on some major stress, so it would make sense that she just wants to focus on that. As Williams hasn't outright denied the rumor, she could just be sick of talking about it to press.
Whatever the reason, we seriously hope Williams isn't telling the truth. Even though, after paying close attention to her body language and tone of voice during the interview above, is she really doing a convincing job of leading us astray? Hmmm....
