Last month, Michelle Williams teared up during a Nightline interview as she talked about falling in love with Heath Ledger and coping with his death. Now the actress has come forward saying she regrets sharing her personal feelings about the father of her child.
Williams ended her three-year relationship with Ledger in 2007, one year before his death. During the interview, which aired on ABC on Dec. 21, Williams got particularly emotional when asked if she had discovered meaning in her tragedy. "I've found meanings around the circumstance, but the actual event itself still doesn't...I can't find a meaning for it," she said.
But when the actress saw the final product, she was deeply disappointed.
"It was a three-hour interview that was edited in such a way that was devastating to me," she tells The Daily Beast. "I want to please people. So that desire in the moment overrode that 'me' that is on top of myself, that 'me' that is on top of a situation. Then they used those few quotes and the way they edited the piece to sell the interview, and it appeared as if I were breaking some kind of silence and sitting down with the express purpose to discuss something that is very private to me. So then I withdraw and I say, 'OK, this subject is off limits if it is going to be convoluted and re-contextualized.'"
Williams admits that figuring out how to deal with the topic of Ledger in the media is always a struggle -- and she's clearly still dealing with the loss. But luckily she's been able to move on to happier times with 5-year-old daughter Matilda.
The actress opened up to The Daily Beast about their happy holiday. "We had a really good (Christmas)," she says. "She wrote two letters to Santa the night before. The first one was 'Dear Santa, How is your wife, Mrs. Claus?' The second was 'Dear Santa, I hope you have a good summer next year.'"
Williams' career is another bright spot in her life, as she's currently racking up award nominations for her role opposite Ryan Gosling in the critically acclaimed Blue Valentine.
