Now that she's gotten engaged, won an Oscar and is expecting a baby, Natalie Portman seems to be on top of the world. But there is one person who's not so keen on the actress' current situation.
Fox News Channel host and possible 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has taken issue with Portman and fiance Benjamin Millepied's decision to have a baby before tying the knot.
"People see a Natalie Portman who boasts, 'We're not married but we're having these children and they're doing just fine,'" Huckabee told radio host Michael Medved on his show this week. "I think it gives a distorted image. It's unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out-of-wedlock children."
Calling Portman's pregnancy "troubling," Huckabee went on to say that the Black Swan star has many more resources than the typical single mother would have.
"Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care," he said. "And that's the story that we're not seeing."
Huckabee is certainly entitled to his opinion, but he should note that Portman isn't exactly a single mom. There's a big difference between being engaged -- with the baby's father clearly involved in the pregnancy -- and raising a child alone.
In fact, as Portman accepted the best actress statue at Sunday night's Academy Awards, she thanked her loving fiance for giving her "the most important role" in her life.
But radio host Medved was quick to mock Portman's speech, chiming in that the father of Portman's baby "didn't give her the most wonderful gift, which would be a wedding ring!"
Whether Portman is a married lady or not, we have no doubt that the sweet-natured, mature, accomplished Harvard graduate has what to takes to be a great mom.
