Miley Cyrus isn't questioning any of her decisions. In her cover story for the December Cosmopolitan, the 20-year-old pop star says that she's happier than she's ever been.
As for her break-up with longtime boyfriend Liam Hemsworth, and the backlash to her risque new image? That's all good. Because God wants it that way.
"This is the best time of my life. I’m not going to look back on it and be like, 'I wish I hadn’t been dwelling over a breakup,' you know? Because that’s not what God wants my life to be about right now," Cyrus tells the magazine. "God wants my life to be about being successful and being happy and blessing other people and being blessed."
Who knew that God was managing Miley's career so closely? We're just imagining the nightly prayers: "Our father who art in heaven, let thy will be done. Thy will is for me to swing naked on a wrecking ball, right? Cool."
Seriously, though, Miley's ego is starting to reach Kanye Went-like proportions. (She name-drops Kanye in the interview, actually, saying that he thinks Miley is "the s**t.") Regarding her VMA performance, she tells the magazine that haters are just jealous, because "I think everyone would have given anything to be me at that moment."
"I was being one hundred percent true to myself…and not many people can say that," Cyrus reasons. "At the end of the day, I would say I’m a nice person, and I take pride in the fact that I treat everyone really well, so there’s no reason for anyone to ever come at me because I only want the best for everybody else. I have a song that’s like, 'Stay in your lane,' because I’m not going to be you and you’re definitely not going to be me, so don’t throw shade. I don’t ever throw shade at anyone."
Uhh, we think Sinead O'Connor and Amanda Bynes might disagree.
The singer is definitely experiencing an insane amount of success right now, and maybe that puffed-up ego is a coping mechanism. But she says this is exactly how she expected her life to go, and she believes she's managed to succeed without selling out.
"I'm just having the best time ever and everything’s falling into place like it’s supposed to. Even people who want to hate on me, they can’t even shut down the fact that I’m literally what everyone is talking about," she boasts. "I don’t want to say that I’m on top right now -- I feel like I’m kind of an underdog in a cool way. It’s almost punk rock to like me because it’s not the right thing to do. Like, society wants to shut me down."
It's kind of cute that Miley thinks what she's doing is punk rock. Really, what has she done that society wants to "shut down?" She got really skinny and started posing naked for magazines. She recorded pop songs about partying and doing drugs. She gave a controversial TV performance... that MTV totally approved beforehand. Sure, she's pissed off plenty of people who miss wholesome Hannah Montana. But in terms of defying The Man? Miley is no Lou Reed (RIP). She's too much of a people pleaser to be truly punk rock.
But that's okay. Cyrus is 20 years old and writing her own rule book. We only roll our eyes at her because we've been that naive girl, thinking that the universe has a plan for us and it will all go exactly as we intended. One day, when the sexy-teddy-bear costume has been gathering dust in the closet, she'll look back and roll her eyes, too.
