Miley Cyrus Says She's Better Off Without Liam Hemsworth (Ouch)

In an interview for Barbara Walters' Most Fascinating People of 2013 special, the singer says that she can "actually be happy" now that she's single

Miley Cyrus says she's happier now that she's single -- but is she throwing ex-fiance Liam Hemsworth under the bus? In an interview for Barbara Walters' 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013 special, Cyrus, 21, says that her broken engagement was the best thing that could have happened to her. Watch the clip below!

"I was so scared of ever being alone, and I think conquering that fear was actually bigger than any other transition that I had, this entire year," Cyrus told Walters of the split. "I don't ever want to have to need someone again, where you feel like, without them, you can't be yourself."

Walters replied, reasonably, that needing someone was called being in love. And Cyrus said she's open to that -- "just not right now."

"I think I'll want that in the time that it needs to be. I don't think I realized what 19 truly is, and I got engaged at 19," she explained. "And I definitely wouldn't change being engaged. It was so fun wearing a fat rock for a few years. But now, I just feel like I can actually be happy."

Ouch. No kind words wasted on Liam.

On the other hand, Miley is being admirably reflective here. She's right about 19 being very young to settle on a life partner. And learning to be alone with yourself is one of the most important parts of growing up. As Miley tells Barbara, "I wait for those moments of silence, when I'm just at my house, by myself."

Also, it's not like Liam has been gushing about Miley. Two months after ending his three-year relationship, he was telling media outlets that he was "much happier" without his fiancee.

"These days I feel like I'm more centered and grounded than I've ever been," said the Hunger Games actor. "I've learned so much. The first few years in L.A. were really tough and scary, but I had to figure things out for myself."

From both these soundbytes, we're gathering that Miley and Liam maybe didn't part on the best terms. On the plus side, the relationship obviously helped them both grow up, which is sometimes the best you can ask from first love.

Walters' 10 Most Fascinating People special airs Wednesday night on ABC. We admit, we were a little surprised that Miley wasn't No. 1 -- but we'll have to tune in to find out who is.
