Mindy Kaling Says She'd Love to Lose 15 Pounds

The Mindy Project star admits that she'd love to be thinner, but her crazy schedule makes it hard to find time for exercise

Mindy Kaling knows she's a bit heavier than most leading ladies on television. "I’d love to lose 15 pounds and exercise five to seven times a week," says Kaling star and creator of Fox's new comedy, The Mindy Project.

Running a brand new sitcom and establishing your reputation as one of Hollywood’s funniest ladies, however, doesn't leave a lot of time to work out.

"I get to work at 6 a.m.," Kaling, 33, tells USA Weekend. "I'm in virtually every scene. We wrap at 7 p.m., and then I stay in the writers’ room until 2 a.m."

"All that time ensconced with a group of comedy nerds makes it especially tough to eat healthy and exercise," Kaling adds.

The former Office star and producer jokes that television writers don't keep healthy lifestyles.

"Comedy writers are some of the least healthy people in the world. The hours are crazy, and in general, it's a lot of men," she says. "The prevailing food feeling is: 'Let's eat things we weren't allowed to eat as kids.' If there's good news about the show, you get sent caramel candy apples, brownies and cookies."

Nevertheless, Kaling says even without losing that weight, she intends her title character, a doctor, to remain a confident, charismatic figure.

"Losing 15 pounds is one of the top five things my character would like to do. On the other hand, she is weirdly overconfident. She could never have an eating disorder. She thinks she should be married to Chris Evans, even though she knows she should lose weight. That's fun.”
