Miscarriage Linked to Previous Abortion?

When I was 16 I had an abortion, which I deeply regret. Six years later, I conceived, but I miscarried at five weeks. My doctor said it would be fine to start trying again. Might I have a problem with all my pregnancies because of the past abortion?

So many women deal with guilt regarding an abortion in their past. It is rather sad and can be self-destructive. When a subsequent miscarriage or infertility issue arises, the guilt may become oppressive. Some women wisely seek counseling about such matters, both from a psychological perspective as well as a physical one.

It is very very unlikely that your abortion caused your miscarriage. As long as the abortion did not result in complications such as infection or the necessity to do further procedures, it is not related to the miscarriage. About one third of all pregnancies end in loss, and in most cases, we never know the cause.

Millions of abortions have been performed and while we all wish this was not necessary, there is no association between an uncomplicated abortion and future childbearing outcomes.

I hope you are able to put away your guilt. That chapter of your life is over. The decisions we made as teenagers may be regretted, but try not to let them get in the way of your happiness as an adult.

I hope your next pregnancy is a happy one.
