There's a new Miss Universe, and she hails from Angola! Twenty-five-year-old business student Leila Lopes beat out 88 other beautiful ladies -- all single and between the ages of 18 and 27 -- to claim the Miss Universe crown at the 60th annual pageant, held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Monday. Watch Lopes' coronation below!
The first runner-up to Ms. Lopes was Olesia Stefanko of the Ukraine, and Miss Brazil Priscila Machado finished third. Miss Philippines and Miss China rounded out the top five. Lopes is the first Angolan ever to walk away from the pageant wearing a crown.
Lopes, who is the first Angolan -- and only the fourth black woman -- to nab Miss Universe honors, vowed to continue her fight against AIDS and poverty, as well as her work campaigning for the rights of poverty-stricken children and the elderly. "I think now as Miss Universe I will be able to do much more," she said after being crowned.
Angola is a former colony of Portugal, and Lopes warmed the hearts of the audience in Brazil by speaking in Portuguese at various times during the ceremony. She also made NewsFeed's list of the best national costumes with her underwater-inspired gown, which was covered in sea shells, fish and coral. (Miss Panama actually took home the prize for best national costume.)
A smiling, teary-eyed Lopes received her crown from last year's winner, Mexico's Ximena Navarrete.
Lopes, a business student from the town of Benguela, credits her smile and her ability "to motivate people" for her win. When asked what she might change about herself, Lopes smoothly replied: "Thank God I'm very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn't change a thing. I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life."
The pageant played on NBC, with hosts Natalie Morales and Bravo's Andy Cohen and celebrity judges including actress Vivica A. Fox and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Adrienne Maloof.
