The ABC comedy Modern Family boasts TV's most functional (or normally dysfunctional?) gay couple: Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), complementary opposites and devoted dads to their adopted baby girl, Lily. Like the series' other two couples, Cam and Mitch get in silly fights and ridiculous situations. But one thing still separates them from the average primetime romantic leads: they've never kissed onscreen.
And the couple's notable absence of PDA has some Modern Family fans riled up. A Facebook group called "Let Cam & Mitchell Kiss on Modern Family!", founded just a month ago, has collected over 12,000 "Like" votes so far. They've also posted this extremely telling screenshot of an affectionate moment between two of the show's couples -- in which it seems the director actively avoided a (gasp!) guy-on-guy kiss. Is it time for Mitch and Cam to pucker up?
Modern Family star Ed O'Neill (formerly of Married with Children fame) doesn't think so. In an interview with Popeater, O'Neill points out that his character, the family patriarch, has never been shown kissing his younger Colombian wife (played by Sofia Vergara). And he likes it that way. "I think it's boring," O'Neill admits. "When people start to make out or kiss or French kiss or caress in a sexual manner, the story stops. Where do you go with that? It's like, 'Okay, now, let's see... five seconds, ten seconds, 15 seconds, gee, they're still making out, my goodness, they're actually kissing.' Who cares?" He also defends the producers' portrayal of Mitch and Cam, saying they wouldn't kiss in public because "they're the most conservative family of the three." (Then again, we see plenty of footage of Mitch and Cam in their own home -- where the characters have no excuse not to cuddle.)
The show's producers are claiming that Cam and Mitchell will see more action in the fall. In a statement released on Tuesday, they revealed "an episode in the works that addresses Mitchell's slight discomfort with public displays of affection." It seems like they couldn't possibly make such an episode without including a big climactic kiss -- but it better not be a cop-out, like the highly publicized, very platonic Will-and-Jack smooch on Will & Grace. Mitchell and Cameron seem so much like a real couple; it seems silly not to show some real affection between them.
