The trappings of the sitcom family have finally gotten a much-needed update as we are introduced to this funny, extended, diverse, and yes, modern family. Patriarch Jay (Ed O'Neill from Married With Children) in recognition and/or celebration of his mid-life crisis has married the much younger Gloria (Sofia Vergara), a Colombian woman with an 11-year-old son with a flair for romance. Daughter Claire and husband Paul (Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell) are raising three kids with Claire desperate to make sure her 15-year-old daughter doesn't make the same mistakes she did. And son Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and his partner Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) have just returned from Vietnam with their adopted daughter Lily, their adopted daughter. Amazingly, none of the jokes feel forced or flat, just real.
