8 Ways to Put Sunscreen on Kids Without a Straitjacket

Got a kid who hates putting on sunscreen? So do we! Here are smart strategies to get the job done.

Slathering our kids with sunscreen is a summertime must -- but is there a mom out there who doesn't dread the task? When it comes to getting coated with the goopy white stuff, our squirmy, one-foot-out-the-door kids aren't ever on board. (Never mind that if you make one wrong move and sunscreen gets in their eyes, just add 45 minutes to your pool departure time.)

Of course, we all know the basics: Use a product with a minimum SPF of 30 and apply (and reapply!) a lot of it. But how do you actually get it on? We asked moms for their best kid-tested strategies:

"I bribe my kids to sit still with their daily gummy vitamins. While they're chewing, I rub the sunscreen in." -- Lisa

"I tell my son it's super hero lotion -- and that he'll have super hero strength if he has it all over him." -- Allison

"I let my kids put some on me while I lather them up. They love it!" -- Natalie

"I keep a plastic headband in my beach/diaper bag; it's much easier for keeping bangs off foreheads than the hand not trying to apply sunscreen." -- Maura

"I make it fun. I put little dots on my daughter's face and sing one of her favorite songs while I rub them in." -- Christina

"I buy the stick for faces -- the one that's like a giant chapstick. They're so much better." -- Elizabeth

"I turn on the TV. Sad, but true." -- Kerry

"I slather cream -- as quickly as possible! -- on my 11-month-old while he's naked, so I don't miss any spots. With my 5-year-old, I  generally resort to using a spray on his body and limiting the goopy cream to just his face." --  Erika
