Chris Rock once said, “As a father, you have only one job to do: Keep your daughter off the pole!” But Tantra Fitness, a studio in Vancouver, Canada, is encouraging the opposite. The studio offers pole dancing classes for kids as young as 9 -- and private lessons for kids as young as 5! Owner Tammy Morris stresses that children have no erotic association with the pole so it’s like any other piece of equipment on the playground. Still, the phrase "pole dancing" is loaded with hypersexual connotations -- not something that should be linked to a 5-year-old.
And Dr. Adam Shafran, co-author with Lee Kantor of 35 Things to Know to Raise Active Kids, agrees that exercise is exercise -- up to a point: “In terms of poll dancing, there’s nothing wrong with the activity, but add the clothing, shoes and makeup, then you have a problem,” he says. And we agree: In an age where girls are dressing sexier and makeup is targeted to pre-tweens, this is one exercise trend we’ll gladly sit out.
