Spats on the school playground are hardly newsworthy -- unless they happen among 20 or so parents at a freakin' kindergarten graduation celebration and the whole school has to be put on lockdown, resulting in cancellation of all previously planned year-end activities. Sadly, I'm not making this up.
Word on the street is that the argument, which happened in Victorville, CA, started as a verbal match between some of the moms (apparently over some parents’ inability to hold their applause as instructed), until their "chivalrous" husbands jumped in and things got physical (though reports are hazy on exactly how physical). The whole thing is so embarrassingly stupid, starting with the fact that it was at their kids' kindergarten graduation!
What's more: Multiple news reports detailing the incident are quick to assure readers that, fortunately, “no children were hurt" in the brawl. They weren’t? Maybe no tiny future first-grader got a folding chair upside the head, but how about the emotional pain these idiotic quasi-adults inflicted on their formerly innocent kids? The humiliation, the confusion and the appalling role-modeling? Do you think these children are going to remember kindergarten as the year they mastered the alphabet and learned to write their names, or the day it was proven whose daddy really could beat up whose?
I’m embarrassed for the entire state of California. I guess even having the actual Kindergarten Cop as governator -- I mean, governor -- isn't a deterrent to bad behavior.
