Until now, the biggest scandals connected with the CBS show Survivor were original series winner Richard Hatch's tax evasion and Survivor: China contestant Denise Martin's job-loss fib. But those scandals don't come close to news of this arrest: a former Survivor producer, Bruce Beresford-Redman, is suspected of murdering his own wife in Cancun, Mexico.
Monica Beresford-Redman, a restauranteur in Southern California, disappeared Monday while vacationing with husband Bruce and their two children. Bruce told police (reportedly, not until Wednesday) that she left to go shopping and never returned -- but that he was "very hopeful someone will find my wife very soon." On Thursday, Monica's birthday, her body was found in a sewer at the the luxury resort where the family was staying. Early reports indicate that she died of strangulation.
A husband in such a case is often the first suspect -- but police reportedly have other reasons to suspect Beresford-Redman of foul play. On the day of Monica's disappearance, a hotel security guard allegedly saw the couple have an argument, during which he says Bruce tried to hit her. And Bruce had visible scratches on his neck at the time when he reported his wife missing. CBS News reports that the victim's sister claims the suspect was confronted with allegations of cheating before the murder occurred. Since the arrest, investigators have released the suspect but have forbidden him from leaving the country.
The suspected murderer is a three-time Emmy nominee for Survivor, and co-creator of the MTV reality series Pimp My Ride. We can't help being reminded of last year's Ryan Jenkins incident, in which the two-time VH1 reality-show contestant was accused of killing his wife (before he committed suicide). Is there something about reality TV that deludes people into thinking they're above the law?
