Munch on Some Magnesium

Calcium is good for you, except in matters of the heart -- too much calcium causes the heart muscles to contract and the arteries to narrow. The antidote is magnesium. “Because magnesium acts as a calcium channel-blocker, it blocks the entry of calcium into heart muscle cells, it can help lower blood pressure and promote better heart function,” says Dina Khader, a registered dietitian and integrative nutrition consultant in Mount Kisco, NY. Add foods to your daily diet that are rich in magnesium including beans, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate (72-percent cocoa or darker), flax seeds, Brazil nuts, almonds and edamame.
