Must-Have Organizing Tools

One of the most frustrating experiences you can have in your quest to get organized is starting your project and having to interrupt the flow by dashing to the store for supplies. While it's true that sometimes the project itself won't immediately reveal everything that is needed, you'll find there are a few common tools of the trade that will help your organizing endeavors.

Keep in mind that many of the items I suggest in the lists below can be recycled as your needs change. For example, a large plastic container on wheels with a lid can hold toys today and Christmas tree decorations in a year or two. Though all of these items can help you get your house into shape, please think of these lists as guidelines to get ideas from.

Household Basics:

  • Brother P Touch label maker and extra cassettes (I use black ink on white tape exclusively)
  • Heavy-duty trash bags and/or assorted boxes
  • Drawer liner (this is the thick liner that prevents items from sliding when a drawer is closed, not decorative contact paper)
  • Small containers for drawers
  • Heavy-duty plastic containers on wheels for storage (these come in large, medium and small sizes)

    Bathrooms & Kitchens:
  • Wicker baskets
  • Plastic containers with handles (great in kids' rooms for small items like Legos, as well as for storage of bathroom items such as hair products)

    Closets:
  • Shelf dividers (to keep items separated by category)
  • Shelf creators (to create multiple levels in a cabinet)
  • Thick plastic or wooden hangers
  • Shoe racks for the floor or canvas for over the door

    Home Office:
  • Post-its
  • Tape
  • Pens, pencils, highlighters and sharpies
  • Stapler and refills
  • Paper clips in large and small sizes
  • Scissors
  • Manila folders
  • Long tabs and Pendaflex folders
