Discrete Chic

The ceiling is the new go-to canvas for parents to play with pattern and color. This has the nice effect of bringing your eye up and emphasizing the room's height. Keeping the rest of the room pretty neutral helps focus the attention.

DIY Tip: To disguise a low ceiling, or just create the illusion of even more draw-the-eye-upward space, avoid dark colors -- and paint your stripes in the same color family as your walls, but a few shades lighter.
