Q: My little boy is becoming increasingly weird about washing his hands all the time. I know they’re talking about sanitation in preschool. Now he is talking a lot about germs, and what things are clean or dirty. How do I keep him washing when appropriate without feeding the fire?
Dr. Tanya: Kids tend to do things in extreme. But it’s good for them to learn healthy habits now. If your son’s behavior starts to interfere with daily activities, talk with your pediatrician. A referral to psychologist or psychiatrist may be in order. But remember, habits tend to weaken over time. With a strong start on personal hygiene, your son may end up with good infection-preventing habits.
