My New Fall BFF: Over-the-Knee Socks

Add an inexpensive dose of fun with these tights alternatives

At first glance, over-the-knee socks may seem a bit pointless and costume-y. But they really can be totally versatile and useful. Wear them with wool shorts or a cute mini, over your tights for a great layered look or under your pants as an extra barrier against the elements. Plus, they make the perfect companion to the season's OTK boots, and are an easy (and cheap) way to update your closet.

The pink-and-black-striped pair from Happy Socks ($15) are a little Pippi Longstocking, a little Wicked Witch of the West, but when worn with a basic riding boot and neutral-hued sweater dress, they add just the right pop of color.

For a more subdued, slightly dressier look, try the merino wool thigh-high ones from J. Crew ($18.50).

Or get a little risque with Hansel From Basel's Ribbon Thigh Hi ($6), available in federal blue and tomato red. The bride-gone-naughty pair are your last chance to reveal a hint of thigh before running for cover during the chilly winter months. Or pull on the brand's Knee Pad Thigh Hi ($6), available in tomato red and royal blue and orange. The collegiate socks are the ultimate match for fall's preppy looks.
