Does Natalie Portman -- Harvard-educated, ballet-training, mom-to-be Natalie Portman -- have a secret party-girl side? With her marijuana-themed Medieval comedy Your Highness hitting theaters on April 8, it's inevitable that people would speculate on Portman's own, ahem, recreational habits. And while Portman, 29, says that she "loves stoner comedies," she clarifies that she doesn't inhale -- at least, not anymore.
"I smoked weed in college, but I haven't smoked in years," the Oscar winner told Entertainment Weekly in December. "I'm too old. I wish I was that cool, but I'm like an old lady now. I'm in bed by 10 p.m. I can't do that anymore."
Of course, this interview took place in the early stages of Portman's pregnancy -- so going to bed by 10 sounds perfectly reasonable!
Much as Natalie loves a good pot joke, it was director David Gordon Green -- best known for another stoner comedy, Pineapple Express -- who convinced her to do Your Highness. And his pitch was that Portman would get to be strong and funny.
"When I sat down with David, he was like, 'The girl’s going to be funny here,'" said the actress, who is best known for her dramatic work. "To have him be able to think of me in that way was so lucky, because (the role) is a real departure from anything I've done on film."
Portman has played against her good-girl image before, most memorably as a gangsta rapper in the 2009 Saturday Night Live digital short Natalie Raps. (And it's still funny! Watch below.)
Your Highness, also starring James Franco, Danny McBride and Zooey Deschanel, arrives in theaters on Friday, April 8. Watch the trailer here.
