Happy National Tortilla Chips Day: 10 Reasons to Celebrate

Excuse us while we run out and buy an extra bag, or 10

If you're like us, you eat tortilla chips on a regular basis (say... daily?). But how often do you actually celebrate everything the humble chip does for your life? Fear not: February 24th is National Tortilla Chip Day (yes, apparently there is such a thing), so this is your chance to pay your respects. We've put together a list of why we should all take some time out of our schedules to appreciate the formidable Tortilla Chip.

1.) You call this a tortilla chip? We call it a perfect excuse to eat a mountain of melted cheese

If there's one surefire way to get away with consuming a bunch of melted cheese in a public setting, it's by drizzling (or pouring) it over a stack of hot crispy tortilla chips. Thank you, wondrous chip, for all that you do.

2.) They never judge you when you Netflix-binge

When in the midst of a House of Cards or Grey's Anatomy marathon, it's important to stay focused on the task at hand. Tortilla chips don't care that you've been sitting in your sweatpants on the same spot on the couch for 14 hours straight. They're just happy to give you the energy you need to keep watching.

3.) They're basically edible silverware

Forks? Spoons? Those are luxuries of the 1%. The humble tortilla chip is happy to replace any of your silverware needs and spare you the work of washing any dishes, ever.

4.) Did we mention flavors? Oh, such delicious flavors

Lime, Spicy, Queso, Black Bean or even just Traditional: It doesn't matter what your preference is as long as it's all of them. (Especially lime)

5.) And shapes

Having a little trouble getting enough queso onto those chips? Try some scoops. Don't like those weird bowl-shaped tortilla scoops? Go for some classic triangles. Triangles not really doing it for you? Then go ahead and grab some mini round ones. Whatever shape of chip you could possibly need, someone out there has already invented it for you. That's customizable snacking at its finest.

6.) They've got a serious crunch

We dare you to find a chip with a more satisfying crunch factor than a tortilla chip. Goldfish? Wheat thins? Potato chips? They're all mere child's play. When we're in the market for a high-decibel snack, we're going with tortilla chips.

7.) Tortilla Chips are the perfect companion for a margarita (or two)

What's a pile of tortilla chips without (several) margaritas? We fully support mid-afternoon cocktail hours, and it's clear that tortilla chips are on our side. Grab a cocktail (or if you really need a break, some tequila) and munch away.

8.) They come free at lots of restaurants

Forget breadsticks. May we suggest that every eating establishment take a cue from our favorite Mexican restaurants and set us up with free tortilla chips the minute we take a seat? Also, when you get a chance, we're going to need another basket for the table, thanks!

9.) Because how else could you eat salsa? Or guacamole, for that matter?

With a spoon? On a cracker? On a piece of bread? Disgusting. Salsa is a snacking necessity, and without a tortilla chip acting as a vessel for that big bite of spicy, you're going to have a hard time meeting your daily recommended dose. Think about all the other delicious toppings that tortilla chips make possible, and we think you'll see just how important those little guys are.

10.) They leave crumbs all over your carpet, but that's ok because your pet loves them

True, tortilla chips are crunchy, salty snacks that love to leave little pieces of corn chip all over your carpet and furniture--but don't worry. A vacuum will quickly restore your home to its former glory. Or better yet, if you've got pets, they're always more than happy to help.
