Mark Harmon may have built his early career playing romantic leads (hunky doctor roles on St. Elsewhere and Chicago Hope come to mind), but he hasn't bothered with Cupid lately. True, his NCIS character, Agent Jethro Gibbs, has been married several times, but his last relationship was three seasons ago (eons in TV time). According to executive producer Shane Brennan, Gibbs' romantic drought ends tonight during the show's Christmas-themed episode.
“There is a kiss in Gibbs’ future—his first since Col. Hollis Mann (Susanna Thompson) back in season four," said Brennan in a recent TV Guide article. He wouldn't divulge whether it's a “romantic or a Judas kiss,” but his mentioning this possibility doesn't bode well.
No one would confuse NCIS with a steamy soap; police procedurals rely more on death and mystery to make hearts flutter. So it's notable that Brennan also refers to tonight's episode as "nostalgic." "Agents Gibbs, DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) and McGee (Sean Murray) are all involved in personal stories,” he said. “For Gibbs, it’s the return of his father (Ralph Waite), who has a secret." Long time viewers know that this father-son relationship has been strained for years, but tonight's episode adds a new wrinkle. "Something’s clearly wrong," said Brennan. "And what is discussed will offer insight into the way Gibbs lives his own life.”
Might it cause him to break one of his "rules"--like, say, the one about never dating a coworker?
