7 a.m.: Look to the Light

“There are many simple, all-natural things you can do throughout the day to get long lasting energy,” says Alan Hirsch, M.D., neurological director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago--starting as soon as you open your eyes. Exposing yourself to two minutes of bright light as soon as you wake up signals the body to shut down its production of melatonin, a sleep hormone that can cause you to feel draggy. "Your brain produces this hormone at night to keep you sleepy," explains Norman Rosenthal, M.D., a professor of psychiatry at Georgetown Medical School in Washington, D.C. "But a morning blast of light tells your brain to quit making melatonin so energy levels can effectively soar."
