Celeb watchers have wondered for years how much of the 2005 divorce between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston had to do with Angelina Jolie. But in the soon-to-be released Angelina: An Unauthorized Biography, Jolie is named as a factor in another Hollywood breakup: Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. The book by Andrew Morton (author of Diana: Her True Story) alleges that Hawke and Jolie had an affair while shooting the thriller Taking Lives in 2003.
"Angie and Ethan couldn't keep their hands to themselves, and they spent a lot of hot nights together in their hotel suite," says Morton's source, who adds the damning allegation that Jolie "has long had a fascination with seducing guys with wives." Hawke and Thurman filed for divorce in 2004, after six years of marriage.
Jolie has denied the claim that she loves married men; in 2005, months before she confirmed her relationship with Brad Pitt, she told NBC's Today show that she couldn't live with herself if she slept with a married man. "I wouldn't be attracted to a man who would cheat on his wife," she insisted. Jolie and Pitt have never stated exactly when their affair started.
So is this new book about to paint Jolie as a serial homewrecker? Certainly, Jolie does have a tendency to fall in love with costars, including first husband Jonny Lee Miller (Hackers, 1995), ex-girlfriend Jenny Shimizu (Foxfire, 1996) and second husband Billy Bob Thornton (Pushing Tin, 1999). None of these actors were married at the time (although Laura Dern was involved in a two-year relationship with Thornton when he reportedly left her abruptly to marry Jolie).
But tabloids love a homewrecker, and since Jolie met Pitt on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, gossips assume that history will repeat itself. Remember all the rumors about Jolie and Johnny Depp, who shot The Tourist in Venice together earlier this year? There was not a shred of evidence that the two were getting cozy, but the world was holding its breath to see if it would happen. Maybe it's difficult for people to wrap their heads around the idea that Jolie -- a self-admitted "adrenaline junkie" -- lives a fairly mundane life now. Well, as mundane as you can get with six kids and two famous movie stars under the same roof.
We wonder if the new biography will bring about a new wave of criticism about the Oscar winning actress' personal life, or land with a thud when it goes on sale next month.
