I was a little conflicted when I first heard the new iPhone 4 was being released. A gadget junkie normally in search of the latest and greatest, I realized I was slightly attached to my iPhone 3G (the past "generation" of the phone). It was my very first smartphone, the beloved device I used to track my contractions when I went into labor with my youngest daughter. Then I read about some of the new phone’s features: HD videocamera, 5 megapixel camera with flash, and the ability to videoconference? Um, 3G, it’s been nice knowing you!
Sounds weird, but the phone is gorgeous. The brushed silver band around the edges is sleek and sexy, and the screen resolution is noticably crisp and bright, even when I do something as simple as scrolling through email. The camera has a flash -- which the old iPhone's didn't -- and it takes amazing photos (5 megapixel equals frame-worthy!). Plus, having an integrated video camera means having one less gadget to stuff in my already overflowing diaper bag.
One new capability I love is that you can create category folders for your apps. (Toddler having a meltdown? You can quickly find the games to keep her occupied.) My folders so far: my 2-year-old’s favorite apps, my beloved news apps (for easy browsing in the middle of the night when I’m up feeding the baby), and recipe apps I can easily access while I'm at the supermarket.
I also love that you can keep several apps going at once –- no more having to reopen your grocery list app if you get a phone call, or having your Pandora app turn off your favorite song mid-chorus because you wanted to check your email.
And perhaps the best mom feature is the new FaceTime application. The new phone has a camera on the face as well as the back, so you can make video calls with other iPhone 4 users. Is baby taking her first steps while dad's at work? Call him so he can watch it live.
