There’s gold in them thar girls! New Moon took in a mega $140 million this past weekend, putting it in all-time third place for an opening weekend behind The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3. Now that’s girl power. But why are Hollywood and the mainstream media so surprised?
Brooks Barnes of The New York Times noted in an article on the box-office beat: “Jaws are dropping all over Hollywood: The Twilight Saga: New Moon, an inexpensive sequel from a three-year-old independent studio, sold a supernatural $140.7 million in tickets over the weekend in North American theaters.”
But why should jaws drop? Worldwide, Mamma Mia! grossed $610 million, the big-screen adaptation of Sex and the City made $415 million and even Hannah Montana: The Movie made $156 million. Just last weekend, Sandra Bullock‘s Southern chick flick, The Blind Side opened to tepid reviews that still couldn’t dampen its strong $35 million showing opposite the unbeatable New Moon.
We could crab all day about how it’s not fair that there’s an audience that’s underserved -- and we’re it! Instead, let’s vote with our ticket budgets and show Hollywood that we’re ready to put our money where are mouths are. And second, those on the creative side can write more movies that we want to see, that reflect both our experiences and our fantasies.
