Staying fit while pregnant has kinda become a no-brainer.
And while past trends have included popular exercises (prenatal yoga), bizarre ones (hoopnotica hoop dancing, anyone?) and controversial moves (we’re looking at you, pregnant body builder, Lea-Ann Ellison) - we’ve got our eye on one pregnancy fitness pursuit that’s athletic, artful and totally fierce:
Mary Helen Bowers created Ballet Beautiful, a fitness program that uses ballet moves to sculpt and tone the body. A dancer with the New York City Ballet for a decade, Bowers has helped whip Victoria’s Secret models, actresses (including Natalie Portman for her "Black Swan" role) and all sorts of women into shape through plies, arm pulses and leg lifts.
She also tells Elle she is currently practicing a modified prenatal version of her popular routine.
“Now that I'm pregnant I'm finding that staying fit and active is more important than ever,” Bowers tells the magazine. She adds that she's "amazed by how strong and healthy (the workout) has made me feel. I've worked with many women through their pregnancies but experiencing it first-hand has been very special.”
To make sure it's safe for her growing pregnant body, she's worked closely with her doctor the whole time: “She is incredibly supportive of me not only continuing with my workout, but also with maintaining my regular routine...There's a lot of change involved and of course some discomfort along the way but my approach has been to embrace the bump and my ever-changing physique.”
