A new public service announcement from Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (the same group behind a series of provocative print ads earlier this year) paints a stark picture of what kids face as they go back to school this year. In the PSA, a typical suburban family gets going with their day -- the mom drinking her coffee, her son brushing his teeth, the family eating breakfast. But then the music turns eerie as the mom straps her son into a bulletproof vest with a target on it, and send him on his way.
It ends with this message: “Is this the new school uniform? Send Congress a message. Pass gun control today or lose my vote tomorrow.”
The ad is designed to unsettle, of course. Back to school is such a time of promise and opportunity, but this commercial reminds that us for parents in Newtown, Decatur and Chardon -- and those of us forever rattled by the events that took place at each of those places -- sending your child to school is an act of courage and faith. This is especially true in light of the fact that Congress has failed to pass any new gun control laws, and little has been done to prevent the circumstances that conspired to allow those horrific school shootings to happen.
What do you think of the ad? Does it fire you up to be an advocate for change, or is it too extreme?
