New 'Robin Hood' Trailer with Russell Crowe

Universal Studios

Back in October, we gave you a first look at the new Robin Hood movie starring Russell Crowe. Now we get to show you the first trailer -- and it's even more extreme than we imagined.

We already knew that this Robin Hood, from the director who brought you Gladiator, would be grittier than previous versions. Now that we've seen a trailer, here are 5 other things that seem to set it apart:

We get to leave the woods. The trailer has shots of an ocean battle and horses running along a beach -- unusual for Robin Hood, a story that usually takes place in the trees.

People actually die. Robin Hood has always been kind of a comic book hero, in that he doesn't really kill anybody. Seeing as this trailer opens with a pile of bodies, we suspect that's about to change.

You don't wanna mess with Robin. Usually, Robin is a character who gets by on his wits, not to mention his superior archery and fencing skills. With Crowe in the role, Hood suddenly becomes an imposing figure, one who could probably beat you up with his fists before taking your money and giving it to the poor. Speaking of which...

Robin has baggage. Did you see that haunted look in Crowe's eyes in the final shot? This Robin Hood is a guy with a past. We're intrigued to find out what turned him into the Dark Knight of Nottingham. And finally...

No men in tights. Ah well, we can't have everything.
