New Tablet? Here's How to Keep You (or Your Kids) from Accidentally Ringing Up $3000 at the App Store

This set-up is a do even if you don't have kids.

The holidays are over and you haven't looked up from your new iPad or Android tablet have you? Best toy for grown-ups ever, right? Well, if you have kids, or even see kids out in public, you know they're big fans of tablets too. Seriously, they are the best ever when you're on an airplane with kids.

Kids or not, you need to set up parental controls on your tablet. Many games and apps make purchasing so seamless, that you don't even realize you've spent $50. Or in the case of a toddler playing Candy Crush, maybe $3000. It can happen.

AllThingsD, a technology blog, has some great tips about how to lock down your tablet.

iPad Parental Controls

The two things you want to make sure you do here are set a password and restrict "In-App Purchases." You'll be prompted to set up a password as soon as you get your iPad open and turned on, do it. Then go into settings/general/restrictions and set "In-App Purchases" to restricted. This will stop purchases without a password.

Android Tablet Parental Controls

Androids (running 4.3 or newer) allow you to set up multiple profiles on a tablet, so you can set one up for your kids, or a guest, that won't allow purchases. Just go to settings/user and create a new user. You can create the new user to only have access to certain features.

Windows 8 Tablet Parental Controls

Similar to the Android device, Windows 8 allows you to create a stand-alone account. This will work on all MS devices, so if they already have an Xbox account, you can use that. With this profile, you can block access to features and set time limits.
