For anyone who’s ever dreamt of paying handsomely to live in the equivalent of a single-car garage, New York City is here for you. Like the skirt and iPad before it, NYC is developing its very own “mini” in the form of apartments, complete with pull out wall pantries, lofts and balcony spaces. Created for the city’s vast single population, the new “My Micro NY” building in the Kips Bay neighborhood will feature 55 apartments roughly 250- to 370-square feet in size that will serve as a test market for future micro-units. Basically, this is the perfect apartment for anyone looking to throw a party and invite one friend, eat Thanksgiving dinner alone or play the shortest game of hide-and-seek ever.
Last July the Department of Housing Preservation & Development launched the adAPT NYC, a competition challenging developers to submit proposals for apartments 300 square feet or less. The project created the largest response ever for the HPD, proving these micro-apartments may be a wave of the future.
According to Business Insider, the units will commandeer rents ranging from $940 for a studio to $1,700 for a two-person apartment.
