Skorts! Celebs! And More Reasons We Love Fashion Week

This Fashion Week we're on the hunt for surpise silhouettes and celebs we love

Mercedes Benz Fashion week is up and running, with models, celebrities and fashion insiders descending on New York City’s Lincoln Center to see the Fall/Winter 2012 shows. Getting a time-traveler's glimpse of what the stores will be stocked with next season is always enlightening. But beyond trend-spotting, we’ll be having fun anticipating how the beau monde will unveil the styles.

SKORT? SKORT!

Fashion week kicked off with the first surprise silhouette of the season: the skort. Yep, that infamous skirt-and-shorts combo made an appearance at the Steven Alan presentation. And we have to admit, it somehow made total sense. Cynthia Rowley offered another unexpected look, putting her own spin on the coverall for her collection. We’ll be watching out for more who-would-have-thought-it looks for fall/winter 2012. Knickers? Scrunchies? Here’s to hoping!

PANTONE-DEAF?

Pantone’s official color of the year is can’t-miss-it-if-you-tried Tangerine Tango. We’ll be on the watch to see if the citrus shade steals the spotlight on the catwalks, or whether designers this season are Pantone-deaf.

RETRO REVIVAL

The '70s, '80s and '90s have been duking it out for the past few seasons, with everything from disco-era dresses to neon to grunge vying for most relevant. This Fashion Week we hope to finally see which decade makes it back to the future.

CRAZIEST IN SHOW

As much as we love watching a parade of swoon-worthy gowns, we can’t deny being equally fascinated by Fashion Week’s weird and wild, crazier-than-thou looks. We’ll be on the hunt to spot all those items that make us say, ‘huh?’ One designer already seems to have an unfair advantage: Up-and-comer Degen’s collection features clothes with knitted trompe l’oeil naughty bits

HAIR APPARENT

Two years on and we’re still seeing the effects of the mussed side braid that Alexander Wang sent down the runway for Spring 2010. It’s managed to become a red-carpet staple with everyone from Beyonce to Nicole Kidman. What style will take this ubiquitous plait’s place is what we’ll be watching for this week. Is it wrong to hope for even more braids?

FRONT-ROW FIXTURES

When Sarah Jessica Parker takes a seat in the front row, you know that the clothes will fade into to background and “Carrie Bradshaw’s here!” will be all anyone can think about. So we’ll put on our best celeb-spotting radar to track which stars perch with the fashion elite this season.
