CG!: What made you decide that it was time to do your own thing?
Nick Carter: After the Backstreet Boys' last Asian tour, everyone was taking a couple months off. Instead of taking the time off, I decided to write. I was just going to be in the studio and maybe start building something on my own, just to see what it sounded like -- to see if I was even capable. I've been writing for awhile but never for myself. I wanted to save the more intimate stuff for a moment when I could really let it happen.
CG!: Who influenced your music on this album?
NCM: I'm an old rock and roll buff. I love Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty.
CG!: That's cool. There has been so much competition between you and 'N Sync, and now Justin Timberlake has announced that he's doing a solo album. Does that bug you?
NC: It's stupid and annoying. When you sit and worry -- Oh, what's the other person doing -- it takes away from you. Live how you want and don't worry about somebody else. You're always going to do something different from the other person, so it doesn't really matter.
CG!: Do you find it hard to write songs?
NC: I have a hard time writing. I'm a drawer. I've been drawing since I was a little kid. I couldn't pay attention in class because I was drawing so much.
CG!: What do you draw?
NC: I used to try to draw my girlfriends. I think one of the most romantic things that anybody can do is draw a portrait of the person you love.
CG!: That IS romantic. But we heard you don't have a girlfriend now.
NC: I can be shy when I talk to women. I'm a shy dude.
CG!: Are you afraid of rejection?
NC: It's kind of weird, because I look at myself as just a normal person. My friends get rejected all the time, so why shouldn't I? I don't think I'm anything special.
CG!: Do you like to spend time by yourself?
NC: Oh yeah, all the time. It's important to be by yourself. It's nice because you have more time to think. My mom always told me, "You're not going to be able to love somebody else or care about anybody else if you don't care about yourself."
