Hard to believe Nicole Richie’s daughter Harlow is 2 years old this month -- seems like only yesterday that the 28-year-old mom of two (son Sparrow was born in September) was partying with Paris Hilton, being tossed in jail for a DUI, driving the wrong way on a freeway while high on pot and checking herself into rehab.
Indeed, it seemed like the onetime star of The Simple Life was the go-to girl for tabloids looking to report on outrageous antics in Hollywood. At 22, she famously strutted down a fashion show runway and yanked up her shirt to show off her newly pierced nipple. “She doesn’t really live by any rules,” childhood pal Kimberly Stewart told People magazine. “She just does what she wants.”
My, my, how things have changed. Today, the photos on Richie's official Web site depict her as a hip, tan, adoring mom posing with her husband and kids, including snaps with the babies at the zoo and at dinner with friends. With her line of chic maternity wear, Nicole Richie for a Pea in the Pod, this former wild child has apparently turned her new identity as a mom into a new career.
“Any woman who’s a mother obviously experiences change,” she told Glamour U.K., adding that while she’s “not perfect” as a mom, she is “loving every minute of it.”
Richie joins a tribe of former party girls whose public personas changed radically after they became moms. Take Christina Aguilera, the "Dirrty" singer who, just a few years before 2-year-old son Max was born, seemed to be fabulizing at a dozen hot clubs at any given moment. Aguilera told Glamour magazine that she often prefers to just stay home, taking Max for walks on the property she shares with husband Jordan Bratman. “Our child,” she told Glamour, “comes first, obviously.”
Angelina Jolie (will we ever forget her childless days, staggering down red carpets with Billy Bob Thornton?) once jumped into a swimming pool in her evening gown after winning a 1999 Golden Globe for playing a drug-addled model in Gia -- but is now raising six kids with Brad Pitt and tirelessly travels to the world’s troubled spots spreading hope and raising awareness as a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador.
Richie's newfound credibility within fashion circles garnered her a guest-judge spot on the season premiere of Project Runway this week, although she told Glamour she often dresses down, at least while at home with musician Joel Madden and their tots: “I don’t wear jewelry because she [Harlow] puts it in her mouth and I don’t wear heels because I run around after her.” And as for that nipple ring? Given that Richie’s breastfed two children now, it’s a safe bet that accessory is a relic of the past, too.
