Nikki Haley

Office: Governor, South Carolina

Experience: Before running for governor, Haley served in South Carolina’s state legislature. Haley won her seat by a narrow margin against an incumbent Republican representative. She was unopposed in her first re-election bid and when running for a third term, she garnered 83 percent of the vote against a Democratic challenger.

Pros: The daughter of Indian-American immigrants, Haley has risen above the political establishment to claim her seat as South Carolina’s governor -- and holds a potential key to minority and female voters

Cons: Haley’s decided lack of experience on the national stage could leave her open to much of the same criticism leveled at Sarah Palin in 2008. Her recent comments that “women don’t care about contraception" could also work against her.
