No interest in ABCs

Our three-year-old loves for us to read to him and has a wonderful attention span, but he seems uninterested in learning the alphabet. He can sing the alphabet song, but can only visually recognize a few letters. Should I be concerned?

Don't worry! Your child is right on target. His interest in words will serve him well when he decides it is time to read. Meanwhile, all you can do is make him anxious by pressuring him when he isn't yet ready.

Don't worry about what other children do. Each child develops at his or her own individual rate. From what you've written about your son, he sounds quite normal. When he becomes interested in letters he will probably just zip along.
