No Pro-Gay Rights People Allowed! Russia Says "No" To Selena Gomez Performing There

The singer's visa has been turned down by the country -- allegedly because of her stance on LGBT rights

Selena Gomez's visa has been turned down by Russian officials, causing her to cancel two performances that she had scheduled in the country later this month.

The 21-year-old singer was due to perform at St. Petersburg's Ice Palace on Sept. 23 and then at Moscow's Olimiisky Stadium on Sept. 25. However, her gigs will have to be cancelled because Russia does not want her entering the country.

There is speculation that the reason the star's visa was rejected was because of her pro-gay stances -- the complete opposite of Russia's opinion on the subject. Recently, Russia create anti-gay laws that caused major outrage not only in the former communist country, but all over the world.

And when celebrities such as Gomez and more voiced their opposing opinions on these new laws, Russia quickly began restricting pro-gay performers from coming to their country.

John Becker, a U.S.-based gay rights activist and author, who also started a petition after hearing of Russia's new anti-gay laws, declared to E! News, "This cancellation of Selena Gomez's visa shows that the Russian government is sensitive and on the defense, and shows that the pressure from people all around the world and the backlash against these laws is strong."

He also stated, "They're afraid to have someone like Selena Gomez come in and potentially use her platform to advance LGBT rights."

Other celebrities that have spoke out against Russia's new laws are Lady Gaga, Madonna, Cher, Sophia Bush and Kerry Washington -- just to name a few.
