In the midst of the cluttered, glittered Hollywood Awards season, Octavia Spencer has been dubbed the new It Actress, with an asterisk. Actually, it’s more like a plus sign. While snatching up best supporting actress statuettes like a game of Pick Up Stix, Spencer has regally ruled the red carpet. Even the deliciously caustic Joan Rivers can’t help fawning over Spencer’s glamorous styling on Fashion Police. Yet even the compliments are backhanded: “Octavia looks more fabulous than her size-2 counterparts.” Why the qualifier? She looked fab, PERIOD. But like Jennifer Hudson and Gabby Sidibe before her, Octavia has garnered more attention not for her performance, but for her weight. (Think about it: One plus-sized actress lost weight and is ubiquitous; one hasn’t and is incognito.)
On the The Ellen DeGeneres show, Spencer confessed that she wore three pairs of Spanx to the SAG Awards. She was so pinched and uncomfortable, she left the afterparty to go home and change. We get it -- we've all worn some kind of sucking-in contraption. But is this what it’s come to, ladies? This amazing actress just won two major awards. She deserves to party.
To counter the media’s misguided focus, Octavia sets the record straight on her Facebook fan page: I’m NOT worrying about my weight. I AM however being proactive in being the healthiest I can be. And before you ask, NO, awards season is not the reason. I've been doing this for the past 10 years because it took that long to gain the weight! Right now, believe it or not, I'm pretty damn healthy! 20 LBS (max) is all I intend to lose.”
Wow, diet logic from a Hollywood celeb. How refreshing. Octavia, you’re beautiful without the Spanx! Plus, breathing is beautiful too!
